How it all works
Below you can find out more about the process involved in each of the services I provide.

I work in MS Word and Google Docs and I am familiar with a number of style guides for both British and American English. I will usually make two passes through the manuscript. After the first, I will send you a list of queries to be answered. Once the answers are returned, I will then make final changes based on your responses. I will be available throughout the process to discuss any questions you may have and to support you through this crucial stage of preparing your manuscript for publication.
New authors and other discounts...
Editing may be essential, but it is often difficult to find affordable services when you are a new author or self-publishing. I'll be frank: editing is expensive. It is a crucial investment in your work that will make sure it has the best possible chance of success, but many of us worry about the cost. This is why I am offering a 'new author' discount, as well as a range of special offers to help support new talent in the community. Ask me about it in a free consultation, or subscribe to news and updates to stay in the loop.
Proofreading
Proofreading is the final stage before publication. Within publishing, this will usually take place after copyediting and typesetting. A 'proof' of the book will be made and sent to the proofreader to check. Checks are usually made for spelling, grammar, syntax, and typing errors.

The process:
You will send me your manuscript as either a word or google document. Changes will be made using track changes for you to approve. If there are any queries to be resolved before I can make changes, these will be sent to you as a numbered list that corresponds to balloon comments on the manuscript. Once these are resolved, final changes will be made and proofreading will be complete.

Pricing: £0.0075 per word.
Copy editing
Copy editing is more in-depth than proofreading. I will not only check spelling, grammar, and syntax, but ensure that style remains consistent throughout, and check for consistency of plot, characterisation, and voice. Depending on the manuscript, I may also suggest changes at sentence level to improve clarity, readability, and the overall flow of the text. A copy editor will usually mark up the manuscript to send instructions to the typesetter. If you are intending to self-publish or are at the querying stage, I will instead use word styles (or the google equivalent) to ensure correct and consistent formatting and typography. This will ensure a clean and tidy manuscript and avoid formatting errors at the publication stage.

If there are any queries to be resolved before I can make changes, these will be sent to you as a numbered list that corresponds to balloon comments on the manuscript. Once these are resolved, I will make another pass through the text before returning it to you to approve any final changes. When the edits are complete you will receive a summary of the work I have completed and a personalised style sheet.

Copy editing with critique
This package includes everything included in the copy editing package, but will provide additional feedback which can either be targeted to any areas you may wish to improve or more generalised. You will receive an additional editor's report on the manuscript. The types of feedback usually covered include commentary on character development, pacing, narrative voice, and structure. I am also able to provide some elements of sensitivity reading in my own areas of expertise and would be happy to discuss this with you during initial consultation.
